My favorite Christian hymn is Amazing Grace. It is such a simple song, but it carries so much truth and power. " Amazing grace how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now am found. Was blind, but now I see."
What is grace? It is God's infinite love, mercy, favor, and goodwill shown to mankind. Without grace we would be completely and utterly lost, separated from God for all eternity. Ephesians 2:4 tells us WHY God poured out His grace upon us, "But God, Who is rich in mercy, FOR HIS GREAT LOVE WHEREWITH HE LOVED US." God could have totally destroyed man, His greatest creation, because of man's rebellion and sin. Instead, He made a way for ALL men to be saved and that way is through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. "For by GRACE are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God." (Ephesians 2:8) Another reason, besides His love, that God provided a way of salvation is seen in Ephesians 2:7, " That in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His GRACE in kindness towards us through Jesus Christ." Think about that! God will be spending all eternity showing His family just how vast and awesome are the treasures of His love, mercy, and kindness.
When we receive Jesus, God's gift of grace, as our personal Lord and Savior we are justified by His grace. "Being justified freely by His GRACE through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus." (Romans 3:24) We are freed from sin and all its destructive nature! Not only that, but we become heirs of God, "That being justified by His GRACE, we should be made heirs according to the hope (expectation) of eternal life." (Titus 3:7) Glory to God! There's so much to be said about our becoming heirs of God and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ, but that will have to wait until another day.
Not only are we saved by grace and justified by grace, Hebrews 4:16 tells us another benefit we receive, "Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of GRACE, that we may obtain mercy and find GRACE to help in time of need." How awesome is our Heavenly Father! He doesn't save us, then leave us to fend for ourselves in this evil world. NO! He provides a continuing supply of His grace, mercy, and loving kindness when we come to Him in faith. Many people look at the terrible things that happen everyday in the world and wonder how they can cope and survive. Romans 5:20 shows us how, "But where sin abounded, GRACE did MUCH MORE abound." The Greek word for abound in this verse means 'to super abound', 'exceedingly abound', and then some on top of that! You see, sin no longer has dominion or power over a child of God. His grace, mercy, favor, and kindness completely overwhelm sin and any of its consequences. That is shouting ground!
